Why Take a Quality Multivitamin?
Jun 02, 2026
I often see patients with an extensive vitamin regimen with nutrient test showing deficiency in essential vitamins and minerals.
Over the years, with the booming of the supplement market, many have let go of the once only recommended supplement in medical practice, the Multivitamin!
If there is one supplement I recommend to nearly every patient, it is a high-quality multivitamin.
Many people assume that if they eat a reasonably healthy diet, they are getting all the nutrients they need. Unfortunately, that is no longer true. Modern food simply does not contain the same nutrient density it did generations ago. Intensive farming practices, depleted soils, food processing, transportation, storage, and busy lifestyles all contribute to nutritional gaps that are difficult to fill through diet alone.
Several peer-reviewed analyses have documented declines in certain vitamin and mineral levels in some fruits and vegetables over time, highlighting concerns about changes in agricultural practices and food quality.
Even individuals who eat organic foods and prioritize healthy eating can still fall short of essential vitamins and minerals needed for optimal health.
Underlying Nutrient Deficiencies
Many Americans are deficient or insufficient in several key nutrients, particularly the B vitamins, magnesium, zinc, and trace minerals. A large portion of the population fails to meet recommended intakes for multiple essential nutrients.
These deficiencies may not always show up as a disease, (such as anemia with low iron or B12) but they can contribute to many symptoms:
- Fatigue
- Brain fog
- Poor stress tolerance
- Mood changes
- Sleep disturbances
- Hormonal imbalances
- Sluggish metabolism
- Hair loss, dry skin, and brittle nails
Often, these symptoms are dismissed, when in reality they may be signs that the body lacks the nutrients required for optimal function.
B Vitamins: Essential for Stress Resilience
One of the most common nutrient deficiencies I see in practice involves the B vitamins.
The B vitamin family support metabolism and energy. They support nearly every system in the body. B vitamins serve as critical cofactors in cellular energy production and nervous system function.
Studies have linked adequate B vitamin status with a healthy stress response and cognitive performance.
Important for Stress Resilience:
Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid)
- Supports adrenal function
- Helps the body respond to physical and emotional stress
- Plays a role in hormone production
Vitamin B6
- Supports neurotransmitter production
- Helps regulate mood and sleep
- Assists in estrogen metabolism
- Supports healthy progesterone function
When stress levels rise, our demand for B vitamins increases dramatically. Yet many people are already starting with low reserves.
Women Need More B Vitamins Than They Realize
Women have unique nutritional demands throughout their lives.
Whether a woman is taking birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, or bioidentical hormones, her need for B vitamins increases.
Birth control pills are known to deplete several nutrients, including B6, folate, B12, magnesium, and zinc. Likewise, hormone metabolism requires adequate amounts of B vitamins to support healthy detoxification pathways and maintain hormonal balance.
Without sufficient nutrients, women may experience:
- Increased PMS symptoms
- Mood fluctuations
- Fatigue
- Poor stress tolerance
- Difficulty maintaining hormonal balance
This is one reason why I encourage women to view a multivitamin not as an optional supplement but as foundational nutritional support.
Minerals need to be optimized too
Vitamins often get all the attention, but minerals are equally important.
The thyroid gland, which regulates metabolism, energy production, body temperature, and weight management, depends on adequate mineral intake to function properly.
Nutrients such as:
- Zinc
- Selenium
- Iodine
- Magnesium
Highbe Multivitamins for Men and Women
Women and Men have different needs, and this is why, at Highbe, we have 2 targeted multivitamins, one for women and one for men.
Both our Men’s and Women’s Multivitamin formulas contain carefully selected vitamins and minerals designed to support:
- Daily nutritional needs
- Stress resilience
- Energy production
- Hormonal balance
- Thyroid function
- Healthy metabolism
- Cognitive performance
- Overall wellness
Rather than waiting for deficiencies to develop, a quality multivitamin helps provide the nutritional foundation your body needs to perform at its best.
Nutrient Testing
I often recommend a nutrient test that assesses cellular levels of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. This is a specialized test, and therefore not prescribed in conventional medical practice.
NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES
Nutrient deficiencies often develop silently for years before they show up as disease.
Most conventional blood tests are designed to diagnose illness once it has already developed. They are not necessarily designed to identify subtle nutrient imbalances that may be affecting your health long before symptoms become severe.
Nutrient testing allows us to identify deficiencies and excess vitamins before they progress into more serious health concerns.
For example,
- low levels of B vitamins may contribute to fatigue, anxiety, poor stress resilience, brain fog, and hormonal imbalances years before a diagnosis is ever made.
- Low magnesium can affect sleep, blood sugar regulation, muscle function, and cardiovascular health.
- Inadequate zinc, selenium, or iodine may impair thyroid function and metabolism long before thyroid disease is detected.
EXCESS VITAMINS
While deficiencies are common, excesses can be just as problematic.
Many people take supplements without knowing whether they actually need them. Over time, excessive intake of certain nutrients can create imbalances and potentially contribute to health issues.
For example:
- Excess vitamin B6 may contribute to nerve symptoms in susceptible individuals.
- Excess iron can promote oxidative stress and tissue damage.
- Too much iodine may negatively affect thyroid function in some people.
- Excess vitamin D without proper monitoring can alter calcium balance.
- High levels of certain minerals may interfere with the absorption of others.
More is not always better! Optimal health comes from balance, not from taking the largest number of supplements possible.
Conclusion
A multivitamin is not a substitute for a healthy diet. Fresh vegetables, fruits, quality proteins, healthy fats, movement, sleep, and stress management remain essential.
However, given the realities of modern life and modern food production, it is increasingly difficult to obtain every nutrient your body requires from food alone.
Think of a multivitamin as nutritional insurance, a simple daily habit that helps fill the gaps, support resilience, and provide the building blocks your body needs for long-term health.
Women need a strong B vitamin complex to support hormonal balance.
Nutritional needs vary and fluctuate, depending on activity and stress levels. Also men and women have different requirements for optimal health with supplementation.
Having a nutrient test helps monitor levels over time, especially if you are taking many different supplements,
Make sure you cover your basic needs with a high quality multivitamin.
